South Australia | Severe weather warning for damaging winds

For people in the Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Mid North, Upper South East, Lower South East and parts of the Flinders, Murraylands and North West Pastoral districts.

Issued at 3:31 pm Monday, 8 September 2014.

A vigorous front near Ceduna will move across Eyre Peninsula during this afternoon then over central parts in the evening, reaching the Adelaide area around 8-9 pm. Isolated showers and thunderstorms ahead and near the front, with a period of rain to follow.

Northerly winds of 40 to 60 km/h, locally around 65 km/h with wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are affecting parts of the warning area today ahead of the front.

Winds are also forecast to become squally northwest to westerly with damaging wind gusts of 90-100 km/h for a period as the front moves through, particularly associated with showers or thunderstorms.

Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Ceduna, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Maitland, Port Pirie, Murray Bridge, Kingscote and Mount Gambier.

Notable wind reports from today include : gale force northerly winds of 65 km/h with gusts to 93 km/h at Cleve; and 91 km/h at Nullarbor; gusts of 80-85 km/h at Wudinna, Port Lincoln, Port Augusta, Minlaton and Mount Gambier.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your property.
* Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe.
